Italian version

It’s all in the title – with nothing in the article adding anything of real relevance, nothing stripping it of its obscenity, nothing offering a more complex line of reasoning – the meaning of the piece published the other day in the New York Times, authored by Thomas Friedman, lies entirely in the title: “This Israeli Government Is a Danger to Jews Everywhere.”

??Now, setting aside any judgment on the Israeli government (about which, as with any government of any state, anyone is free to form their own opinion), and setting aside any view on the war in Gaza, we must ask why it is seen not only as inevitable but even necessary that Jews around the world should be in danger because of what the Israeli government does. Are Sudanese people around the world in danger? Are Nigerians? Are Russians? Are Chinese? Let us assume that Israel is like Sudan, like Nigeria, like Russia, like China: is there anyone prepared to argue that it is inevitable that people from those countries are, by that logic, also in danger?

As usual, the outrageous claims made in the New York Times article were promptly adopted and echoed far and wide, bolstered by the persistent argument that such views are all the more valid and admirable because the author has a Jewish name. And that, it seems, is enough to lend credibility to obscenities such as this. Listen carefully: “Jews all over the world” writes Friedman, “should prepare themselves, their children and their grandchildren for a reality they have never known before: being Jewish in a world where the Jewish state is a pariah state – a source of shame, not of pride.”

There are two points to be made here. First: it’s always been like this. Always. Are you Jewish? Fine. So long as you don’t tell me you support Israel. Second: even if that were the case, even if Israel were indeed guilty of crimes that, in the eyes of the public, somehow place the burden of “guilt” on Jews worldwide, this should be seen as an aggravating factor against those who commit acts of anti-Jewish violence. Do you throw stones at a Jewish child in New York or Rome because Israel commits crimes? That should cause deeper revulsion, not a resigned shrug at the inevitable.

Finally, the profoundly racist claim we have denounced time and again: one that this infamous New York Times article once more legitimises and endorses. According to this charming perspective, if the Jewish people are to have any hope of avoiding violence, they must denounce genocide, they must denounce ethnic cleansing. Otherwise, they are to stand by and witness their own extermination. Just as, once, they were expected to apologise for deicide.
Goebbels said something similar.
